Register a Death

Why register a death?

By law all deaths occurring in Northern Ireland must be registered. A death should be registered as soon as possible to allow funeral arrangements to go ahead, but no later than five days from the date of occurrence except where the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

How to register a death

You do not need to attend the Registration Office to register a death.

Following a death, the GP or Hospital Doctor will forward a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death electronically to the General Register Office for Northern Ireland (GRONI), who will forward it to the registration office which covers the deceased’s home address.

The doctor who signed the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death may have passed your contact details to us. If they have, we will contact you to organise the registration of the death.   If you have already appointed a Funeral Director, they will also provide us with a next of kin to contact.

To talk to us about this process, call our Registration Office on – Mossley Mill – 028 90 340180 / Antrim Civic Centre – 028 94 481315, Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.
