Wildflower Dander at Shane's Castle
11 June 2015
Enjoy an evening walk through the beautiful Shane’s Castle Estate on Wednesday 17 June between 6 and 7pm to admire the stunning wildflower meadows.
Ruth Wilson, Biodiversity Officer with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council says, “Come along on the evening and join Lord O’Neill and woodland flora expert Darryl Ridge from the Forest Service as they guide us through the wildflower meadows. As well as admiring the different types of flowers, we will also be searching for orchids.”
Ruth continues, “Wildflower meadows have declined by 97% over the past 50 years, due to agriculture intensification. At Shane’s Castle it is possible to walk through some wonderful wildflower meadows that are alive with grasshoppers, butterflies and bees. We’ll also be able to marvel at the magnificent parkland trees that support important and rare insect species.”
Places for this event must be booked in advance by contacting Ruth Wilson
