Triathlon Challenge Set For Valley Leisure Centre

11 August 2015

The Mayor is joined by former Triathlon winner Brian Campbell and Valley Leisure Centre Manager, Stephen Bartley, to launch this year’s Stena Line Triathlon which takes place on Sunday 6th September.

The ever popular Stena Line Triathlon returns to Newtownabbey, taking place at Valley Leisure Centre on Sunday 6th September.  The first wave starts at 9am.

The triathlon provides a challenge of endurance as competitors take part in cycling, swimming and running. The competition is fun and inspiring as athletes push themselves to their limit to get across the finish line and perhaps set a new personal record, or take away a first, second or third place prize. The event comprises of a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride around a new course devised for this year’s event and a 5km bike ride around the soon to be developed Valley Park.

The Stena Line Triathlon is part of the Ulster Sprint Calendar and is run in association with Triathlon Ireland and Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Launching the event, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg commented,

“We’re delighted to once again be working in partnership with Stena Line and Triathlon Ireland to host the event at Valley Leisure Centre. The triathlon will put competitors to the test physically and is sure to be both a challenging and rewarding sporting experience. We hope to see a good turnout of supporters on the day to provide encouragement for those competing.”

The event is open to recreational, elite and club competitors. There are three age categories: Junior (aged 16-19); Senior (aged 20-39) and Vets (aged 40 and over). A small entry fee of £30 is required to take part and includes a free t-shirt.
