Tom McKibben Swings His Way To World Success
10 August 2015
Local Newtownabbey golfer Tom McKibben has been crowned the new World Junior Golf Champion at just 12 years of age.
Shooting rounds of 69-75-73, Tom scooped the coveted world title by just one stroke at last week’s Junior World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg conveyed his delight at Tom’s success; “This is a fantastic achievement for Tom and we are all incredibly proud of him. Tom is no stranger to success; just last month he won the Junior Masters title at Ballyearl Golf Course and back in 2014 he was crowned Junior Sports Person of the Year at the Newtownabbey Sports Awards.”
Councillor Hogg continued; “Already rubbing shoulders with world golf champions such as Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, I have no doubt that Tom is destined for big things and we look forward to hearing about more of her successes in the future.”
This latest sporting success for the Borough comes on the back of Carole Catling’s victory at the Special Olympics World Games where she returned home to Newtownabbey with a gold medal.
