The Best of Northern Irish Theatre at the Old Courthouse
28 September 2015
The Old Courthouse, Antrim is delighted to welcome two of Northern Ireland’s most exciting theatre companies on to the stage in September and October.
On Tuesday 29 September, Bruiser Theatre Company return with their new production Playhouse Creatures – a riotous and moving account of the precarious lives of the first Restoration actresses. These gutsy, flesh and blood heroines grapple for recognition and a new social role for women, whilst falling victim to the attitudes and consequences of the age. Thought-provoking and wickedly funny, this bawdy and brilliant show promises strong women, black humour and great entertainment, with a fabulous cast including Jo Donnelly and Roma Tomelty.
c21Theatre Company will take to the stage on Monday 5 October with their adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. The vengeful Jewish money-lender Shylock tries to extract his ‘pound of flesh’ from his Christian opposite Antonio, while the clever Portia uses her unique skills as a lawyer to win her marriage partner Bassanio. Using their winning edited and fast-moving style, c21 have transposed the setting of this classic play to 1920s America, promising theatrical appeal and a sophisticated narrative promising an accessible and entertaining evening of theatre.
