The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg, joins local Councillors, Community Representatives and local residents to launch the Rio de Rathcoole event taking place on Saturday 15th August 2015.

Despite the gloomy summer weather, Rathcoole will be awash with colour on Saturday 15 August when this year’s Rio themed community carnival hits the street!

The colourful procession will make its way from 1pm along Rathcoole Drive, Green End, Ardmillan Drive and Green Walk.  Everyone is welcome to join the procession as individuals, families, friends and local groups as Rathcoole will be transformed into Rio De Rathcoole Carnival.  There will be a samba band, stilt walkers, circus skills sessions, world music and dance, a petting farm, inflatables, face painting, craft stalls, classic cars, games, fancy dress competition and a bouncy castle.

Councillor Paul Hamill, Chair of the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership (RNRP) said:

“We are inviting everyone to dress up in the carnival theme and join us in the procession.  This is a great free family fun event for the estate.  We hope as many people of all ages can join in. This year sees the inaugural Rathcoole Soap Box Derby. The race starts at 3pm and already there’s an impressive line-up of go-karts being worked on.  Another highlight will be the dog show, starting at 2.30pm, with thanks to Pets at Home, Jollyes Petfood Superstore and Barkin’ Beauties for supplying prizes.”

The carnival event is the annual finale to a host of events taking place as part of the SPARK week of activities from 10-15 August throughout the estate. Organisers are also seeking local traders, crafts people and artists to sell their high quality hand-made designs and goods on the day.

Mark Johnston, Abbots Cross Presbyterian Church/SPARK project pointed out;

 "This is a collaborative event that we have been working on with Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Community and Physical Sub Group. We are hoping local families and organisations will take advantage of the wide range of entertainment and activities on offer and hopefully build their own unique go-kart to take part in the race. We are hoping supporters will come and cheer on their teams.  Finally we are indebted to our local volunteers, without whom we would be unable to run such a full programme of events – we are confident there is something for everyone to enjoy. There is even a zimmer frame race!!”
