The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey hosted a reception at Mossley Mill for Newtownabbey athlete Carole Catling, who picked up a gold medal in the table tennis singles event at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles.

This is not Carole’s first major win as she previously won a gold medal at the 2011 Special Olympics World Games in Athens.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg, expressed his delight at Carole’s recent success;

“We are all incredibly proud of Carole and delighted that she will be bringing another gold medal back to the Borough. Carole was the only athlete from the Borough to qualify for the games and earlier in the year was awarded Sports Person of the Year with a disability at the Newtownabbey Sports Awards. She is an incredibly talented athlete and we look forward to hearing about more of her successes in the future.”

Carole was one of twelve Ulster athletes who competed for Team Ireland at the Games. The team had one of their most successful games to date, bringing home a total of 33 medals.
