Beacons to shine for VE Day 70th Anniversary
05 May 2015
Beacons will light up across Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough on Friday 8th May to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey will join hundreds of people throughout the UK as they simultaneously light beacons on the motte at Antrim Castle Gardens and on top of Carnmoney Hill.
Mayor, Councillor Thomas Hogg, will light the beacon at the motte in Antrim Castle Gardens at 9:30pm, following a short lighting ceremony and tribute which begins at 21.15pm. This event is open to the public and the Mayor will be joined by his chaplin, Rev Campbell Dixon, members of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council and representatives from the Royal British Legion.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Blair, will light the Carnmoney Hill beacon at 9:30pm, following a moment of reflection and prayer. Given the location, this lighting ceremony will not be accessible to the public. This beacon however will be highly visible within and beyond the boundaries of the Borough.
