This weekend over 250 competitors from across Ireland will kick off the Inaugural Abbey Open Judo Championships at the Valley Leisure Centre.  Organised by the Abbey Judo Club, this year the focus is on under-14s and novice to intermediate senior players, the event will run on Sunday 31st May from 12-4pm

The event will be on display on the main floor area in the Valley with players competing on 3 mat areas.  The event is supported by the Northern Ireland Judo Federation and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Mayor Thomas Hogg officially opened the event which is supported by one of Abbey Judo Sponsors, Ron Higgins of NorChem Europe.  Abbey Judo has been situated within the Valley Leisure Centre since 1971.  Currently the club is helmed by William Cully who has been with the club since the age of 11 and has made significant changes within the club in the past 6 years.  Abbey Judo was named Newtownabbey Club of the Year 2014 for various reasons including winning 77 competitive medals across UK and Ireland.  Next year the Abbey Open event is aimed to be a full strength event catering to seniors and masters and all applicable categories.
