Mayor welcomes Ice Maidens to the Borough

07 November 2018

The reception was far from frosty, as Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Michael welcomed two of the all-female Ice Maiden team to Parkhall Integrated College earlier this afternoon. Students from both Antrim Grammar and Parkhall Integrated College attended the event, with special guests High Sheriff of County Antrim, Miss Gillian Bingham VR FRGS and Commander Brigadier Jon Swift OBE.

Ice Maidens, Major Sandy Hennis and Lance Sergeant Sophie Montagne captivated the audience with their truly inspiring experience of covering 1,700km across the Antarctica, using muscle-power alone, pulling sledges and battling temperatures of -50°C and wind speeds of over 60mph, during their three-month coast to coast journey.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Michael commented, “I am delighted to welcome two of the Ice Maidens here today to share their extraordinary story with us all. During this year and the next couple of years, these students will be faced with a number of decisions, challenges and opportunities. The Ice Maidens story has demonstrated that no matter what the goal or challenge they set, by having the determination and motivation, anything is possible.”
