Getting a taste for mental health and wellbeing
10 July 2018
A newly formed peer support group along with psychologists from the Northern Trust’s Psychological Therapies Service, got a prescription for healthy eating following a visit from Dr Janice McConnell, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Nutrition and Wellbeing Officer.
Dr Janice McConnell, who is a registered nutritionist specialising in public health, commented; “In Northern Ireland we have the highest incidence of mental health morbidity across the UK. Very often we focus on the benefits our dietary habits can bring to our physical health. However, growing evidence suggests that food and nutrition can have a very positive benefit on our mental health and wellbeing as well.”
Dr Jane Simms, a Chartered Psychologist with the Northern Trust added; “As a service we are keen to raise awareness of the links between nutrition and mental health. Dr McConnell has cemented these links in a highly practical way for us, advising on dietary habits as well as the techniques required to bring the identified dietary changes into our everyday lives!”
