Council aims to Nurture business start-up rate in the Borough with a new programme of support

31 August 2017

The Mayor, Councillor Paul Hamill and Jennifer McWilliams (Antrim Enterprise Agency), launch the Nurture Programme.

The Council is delighted to announce the new “Nurture Programme” which aims to support those businesses at the early start-up phase of trading. The programme delivered by Antrim Enterprise Agency will offer a combination of specialist mentoring support and interactive workshops to assist those residents of the Borough with commercial premises or those committed to securing commercial premises in the Borough.

The Nurture programme will provide participants with a business audit and operational plan, 1-2-1 mentoring and workshops to enable them to:

  • Work on areas of the business which are under-performing
  • Share areas of the business which are excelling to ensure a vibrant commercial Borough
  • Understand as tenants their responsibilities including all legal and operational issues they have to adhere to
  • Understand the recruitment process of taking on staff
  • Manage their cash flow in the early days
  • Attract new customers to their business

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Hamill, welcomes this new programme of support from the Council.  Speaking at the launch he said: With almost 20% of businesses failing in their first year and only 40% still operating after five years, this programme is ideally placed to address the most common reason for failure; that being when the owner lacks the knowledge and experience in managing all aspects of their business.”

He continued: “The Nurture programme aims to address this by equipping the owner/manager with knowledge of key business areas along with an expert mentor in a number of fields from accountancy to sales, marketing and human resources. This programme is an excellent catalyst to grow the business birth rate further and also address in a small way the empty property situation within the Borough”.

Applications are now open for any new business that is starting up or has not been trading more than 1 year. It is also available to those who have or are committed to securing commercial premises in the Borough.  Recruitment has commenced on the programme which runs to March 2018.
