Work Commences on Rathcoole MUGA!

29 February 2016

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is delighted to announce that work is now underway on the construction of an exciting, new Multi-Use Games Area at Rathmullan Drive, Rathcoole.   The project, which received an impressive £120,000 funding from Council in November 2014, has begun following the transfer of the land required from Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Speaking at the sod-cutting, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg expressed his utmost thanks to the range of organisations involved in the project, “The development of this new Multi-Use Games Area is the culmination of hard work by many agencies and I would particularly like to thank the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, for the land transfer. I would also like to thank the Department for Social Development and the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership for their commitment to the project, especially the commissioning of the study which identified the need for the MUGA.  Going forward I know that the Games Area will be well used by the local community and I am delighted that Council has been able to enhance sports provision in Rathcoole.”

Councillor Paul Hamill, Chairperson of the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership added, “As current Chair of the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership and as a parent living in Rathcoole, I am delighted to see the Multi-Use Games Area development underway.  The Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership Youth sub-group headed a youth consultation which identified the need to improve sports opportunities for young people in Rathcoole.  One of the key outcomes within this was to improve sports facilities, particularly pitches and lighting.  Once up and running the MUGA will do exactly that and the Partnership is already working on a sports activity programme for the summer months.”

The Multi-Use Games Area, which is due to be completed by the end of April, was identified as a need through a community consultation exercise commissioned by the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership and supported by Council. When complete, the MUGA will be fenced and floodlit and will offer high quality space for those wishing to take part in recreational activities, in particular young people, who were highlighted as a priority through the consultation process.

To accompany the new facility, a proposal for a second phase development, to include a 3G Pitch will now be progressed on land beside the new MUGA.  The Council will be exploring funding opportunities through the Department for Social Development, Neighbourhood Renewal programme and other potential sources over forthcoming months.
