06 September 2016

Almost 120 competitors took part in the 30th Stena Line Triathlon event at V36 and Valley Leisure Centre on Sunday 4 September.

The annual event, which included a junior, senior and veteran category, was open to recreational, elite and club competitors and provided a challenge of endurance as they completed the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

First across the line with an impressive time of 1.05:20 was Mark Diamond in the veteran category, closely followed by Odhran McKane who was the first junior to complete the event in a time of 1.05:58. In third place overall and first in the senior category was Paul McAllister, just seconds behind Odhran with a time of 1.06:47.

In the female section, Emma Sharkey, who was competing in the senior category, ran home in a time of 1.15:10, with Anne Paul in first place in the veteran category with a time of 1.20:42. The first female junior to cross the line in 1.25:13 was Lauren Strange.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott attended the event and presented the winners with their prizes; “I was delighted to see such a great turnout at the Stena Line triathlon event which is part of the Ulster Sprint Calendar. This annual competition is a fun and inspiring event, pushing athletes to their limit to get across the finish line and perhaps set a new personal record.”

Councillor Scott continues; “This year for the first time, we ran a ladies try-a-tri programme in advance of the event to encourage females to take up the sport. The seven week programme, which took place at the Valley Leisure Centre, took participants through the various stages of training for a triathlon and prepared them for the their first event. I would like to congratulate all those who completed the programme and took part in their first event.”
