Summer Fun at Rathcoole MUGA

26 August 2016

The new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at Rathcoole was a hive of activity as it hosted a number of sports programmes throughout the summer.

Organised by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in conjunction with the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, the programmes designed for 3-12 year olds included both a multi-sports and a multi-skills week of activity. Those who attended had the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports including hockey, football, basketball and tennis as well as developing skills such as agility, balance and co-ordination which can be applied to a range of sports.

Situated on Rathmullan Drive in Rathcoole, this new MUGA, which was officially opened in June 2016, is a welcome addition for the area and over the last few months has been enjoyed by many local young people.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott represents the Rathcoole area and is delighted to see this facility being so well used; “Following an extensive consultation exercise, one of the key priorities identified in the Rathcoole Neighbourhood Renewal Action Plan was the lack of suitable space for sports activities. The development of this new £120,000 facility has directly addressed this problem and activities such as these summer sports programmes provide excellent opportunities for kids to get outdoors and enjoy what is on offer right on their doorstep.”

In addition to the sports programmes, the MUGA has also been enjoyed throughout the summer by the local SPARK project who used it for their Youth Drop In and Abbey Surestart who enjoyed a Euro’s themed football event.

Rathcoole MUGA, which is fully floodlit, will be open from 9am – 9pm throughout the year.
