Schools Engagement in Democracy
04 October 2016
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will host 100 young people from eight schools for a Democracy Day Event on Tuesday 11 October. Local schools including Antrim Grammar and Ballyclare High School will take part in this event as part of European Local Democracy Week.
This event now in its second year, aims to raise awareness of the work of local authorities and promote citizen and community participation. A key note speaker Jan Surotchak from one of the young Democratic Eastern European Countries, will speak about the importance of building united and democratic societies.
During a speed networking session pupils will have the unique opportunity to get to know the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott, and other Council Members.
The Mayor commented;
“This collaborative event is an excellent way for students to engage with our Council members and get a sense for the work we do. Equally it is a great opportunity for Councillors to find out about the pressing issues that concern the young people living in our Borough”.
