Merchant Navy Day in Antrim and Newtownabbey

06 September 2016

Last Friday, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council supported Merchant Navy Day at both Antrim Civic Centre and Mossley Mill. During the services, the Red Ensign was raised by Mr Ivan Tennant, Chairman of the Merchant Navy Association (NI) to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of the Merchant Navy. The Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mrs Joan Christie OBE attended both ceremonies to read a special message from HRH Earl of Wessex KG, GCVO.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott commented, ‘The Council recognises the immense sacrifices that the personnel of the Merchant Navy made in both the First and Second World Wars. The campaign pays tribute to the gallantry and sacrifice of those brave seamen, who ensured vital supplies reached our shores and our ships.’
