Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Council, Councillor Thomas Hogg samples some sweet treats with Barbara-Anne & Ruth from Little Treats.
NI Year of Food & Drink 2016 celebrations are continuing in Antrim and Newtownabbey during the month of February and as February is the month for love, what better time to “Love Local.”
The Borough offers a wide variety of local produce including Lough Neagh eel, organic beef at Ballylagan Organic Farm, sausage rolls from Ashers, or delicious cupcakes from Little Treats. The yearlong initiative, supported by Tourism NI and Invest NI, to showcase Northern Ireland’s food and drink offering, has been proving popular with everyone throughout the Borough.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Thomas Hogg visited local business owners Barbara-Anne McMullan and Ruth Blair of Little Treats, to sample some of their delicious locally produced cakes, cookies and sweet treats. Councillor Hogg said, “Antrim and Newtownabbey has many excellent providers of local produce and we are extremely lucky to have the quality and variety of food locally, whether that be cafés, restaurants, hotels, farm shops or food at our events.”
Everyone has their favourite local food, coffee shop, bar and restaurant, so the Mayor is encouraging everyone to tweet us a picture of their favourite “Love Local” product or place, with the hashtag #ANLoveLocal for your chance to win a box of cupcakes from Little Treats.
The Council will be delivering a range of initiatives in 2016 including improving the food experience at existing events such as Garden Show Ireland, the Ballyclare May Fair, Shoreline Festival and other seasonal events. We will also be working with external partners to deliver new food events in the Borough, such as the River to Lough festival in July. We plan to host a ‘Restaurant Week’ initiative later in the year and are investigating the potential to promote a Good Food Circle in the Borough.
