Friends of Antrim Castle Gardens hosted the recording of BBC Radio Ulster’s popular Saturday morning programme, Gardeners’ Corner, on Tuesday 14 June at the Oriel Gallery located at Clotworthy House, Antrim Castle Gardens.

Friends of Antrim Castle Gardens were delighted to be included in this year’s schedule of recordings, which was timely as the group’s growing activities have expanded to include herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables as well as the recent development of a new cottage-style garden that aims to attract butterflies into the gardens. All these attractions can be enjoyed by the public visiting the walled area at Clotworthy.

The evening was attended by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Noreen McClelland along with representatives from local community groups, schools and growing projects. The event, hosted by Friends of Antrim Castle Gardens, was supported by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Attending on the evening was the Allianz Garden Show Ireland 2016 winner of the Eppy Schierbeek Cup, Ballycraigy Primary School. The Eppy Schierbeek Cup is an annual award to recognise team gardening capability, sponsored by Friends of Antrim Castle Gardens and supported by the Enkalon Foundation.  Primary school pupil, David Alexander, represented the school at the event and asked Gardeners’ Corner experts, Averil Milligan and Reg Maxwell, what plants would be best suited for a wetland garden which the school is planning to develop in their grounds.

Adults interested in volunteering with Friends of Antrim Castle Gardens can come along on any Saturday (excluding 18 June) between 10.30 and 12 noon to the walled garden area at Clotworthy to chat to volunteers about how to become involved.

To listen to Gardeners’ Corner and the recording from Antrim Castle Gardens, tune into BBC Radio Ulster on Saturday 18 June at 9am or listen to the podcast from the website at www.bbc.co.uk Gardeners’ Corner.
