Fairtrade Football Frenzy!

10 March 2016

Mount Saint Michael’s Primary School were crowned champions at the Fairtrade Football tournament held in Antrim Forum on Wednesday 9 March.  Primary Schools from across Antrim came together to celebrate the end of Fairtrade Fortnight at the annual 5-a-side tournament. The event, which is proving popular attracted ten teams from Ballycraigy Primary, Templepatrick Primary, Round Tower Integrated Primary, Greystone Primary, Antrim Primary and Mount Saint Michael’s Primary School.

Speaking about the event, Environmental Awareness Officer for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Leona Donaghy said “The event was a great success with each of the teams giving their all. Teachers, Parents and Fairtraders worked together to make the event a great success with Tesco kindly donating snacks including organic Fairtrade bananas to keep the kids on their game.”

Prizes for the winning team included footballs manufactured under the Fairtrade terms. This helps make a real difference to lives of the workers in Pakistan where almost all of the world’s footballs are produced.
