Allen Park Sports Hub officially opened!

28 October 2016

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott was delighted to officially open the new Allen Park Sports Hub, following a major development project.

Originally opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course featured a driving range and a small clubhouse. Following a £4.5m investment, of which £350,000 was provided by the Enkalon Foundation, the centre now features a full size sports hall suitable for a range of indoor activities such as basketball, 5-a-side football, badminton, netball and martial arts.

In addition to ten indoor changing rooms, the new building also includes two state-of-the-art golf simulators. Playing true to life simulations, you can now enjoy a round of golf on world class courses such as Hazeltine in Minnesota and Royal Troon in Scotland. The existing clubhouse has also been upgraded and redeveloped into changing facilities and a committee room. Upstairs the licensed restaurant has been modernised, offering stunning views across the golf course. Outdoors, the three new floodlit 3G pitches, suitable for football, Gaelic and rugby are a welcome addition to the centre and are being enjoyed by many local sports clubs on a weekly basis.

The impressive new building at Allen Park has been named the Schierbeek Pavilion, in recognition of the contribution made to the Antrim area by former Enkalon Managing Director and Freeman of the Borough, Dr Roelf Schierbeek CBE.

Speaking at the launch, Councillor Scott commented; “I am delighted to officially open this new facility here on the outskirts of Antrim town. We are extremely honoured to have Heleen Schierbeek, daughter of Dr Schierbeek, and her husband Miguel who have travelled all the way from Spain to be here today.  British Enkalon was based in Antrim for many years and when the factory closed, Dr Schierbeek set up the Enkalon Foundation to leave a lasting legacy in the area. We are indebted to the financial support received from the Enkalon Foundation and it is our privilege to name this building in his honour.”

Councillor Scott continued; “Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is committed to the continuing development of sport and physical activity across the Borough and there is no doubt that this new sports hub will contribute greatly to achieving our aim of making more people, more active, more often.”
